    KOLKATA: Although linear television remains the primary mode of viewing for most Indian households, cableTV  operators still face numerous challenges – what the rapid uptake of OTT services and the inflexible pricing regulations set by the regulator. And the situation is not getting any better for the tribe, says Maharashtra Cable Operators Foundation (MCOF) president Arvind Prabhu.

  • With 3.9bn viewing mins, Bigg Boss 14 sees highest launch week numbers in last 3 seasons

    The current season of Colors’ Bigg Boss has registered 3.9 billion viewing minutes in its launch week, the highest in the last three seasons.

    As per the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India data, the last 3 seasons of Bigg Boss had registered 2.5, 3.4 and 3.4 billion viewing minutes respectively in the first week. Although it has not made it to the top five programmes of Hindi General Entertainment Channels in Week 40, in the HSM Urban 2+ market, the season 14 recorded 3.1 billion viewing minutes as compared to 2.5 billion in season 13, 2.6 billion in season 12 and 2 billion viewing minutes in season 11.

  • Three weeks into IPL, sports competes with news for advertisers' attention

    In the absence of fresh content and live sports, TV news was the biggest gainer in the first half of 2020. Cut to a month into the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020, news genre sees a dip in ad volumes as most advertisers flock to invest in IPL.

    As per latest TAM data, the share of news genre in ad volumes shrunk to 30% during the first 22 days of the tournament compared to 32% in the same period before the tournament took off on September 19. Data also shows that in the same period, ad volumes of sports genre spiked by nearly three times compared to 22 days prior to IPL 13.

     

    Interestingly though, GEC did not lose out much. Though growth numbers were far less than sports, ad volumes saw a 9% rise in the first three weeks of IPL against news’ meagre 3%.
