• Star Utsav, Colors Rishtey, Zee Anmol, Zee Anmol Cinema and Sony Pal back on DD Freedish

    Star India, Viacom18, Zee Entertainment and Sony Pictures Networks India have made a comeback on DD Freedish with their second rung general entertainment channels Star Utsav, Colors Rishtey, Zee Anmol, Zee Anmol Cinema and Sony Pal at a base price for over Rs 15 crore per annum for each channel.

    These five channels have been added on DD Freedish on a pro-rata basis for the period of June 10, 2020, to March 31, 2021.

    It may be recalled that these four broadcasters had pulled the plug from DD Freedish from March 1, 2019, as TRAI’s new tariff order implemented on March 31 did not allow the inclusion of FTA channels in the pay channel bouquet. The channels were priced between 10 paisa to Re 1 and made a part of the bouquets formed by the broadcasters.

  • TV Today Network cites tepid growth, less revenue for discontinuing Delhi Aaj Tak

    MUMBAI: Recently, TV Today Network announced that the transmission of its Hindi news channel Delhi Aaj Tak (DAT) will be discontinued from the midnight of 30 June 2020. Speculations on the reasons for the closure were rife. The news network, however, has cited the tepid growth of the channel as a reason for discontinuing its operations.

    In a regulatory filing, TV Today Network said that DAT contributes less than one per cent to the total revenues of the company. It informed that total income from DAT for FY 20 was Rs 370.93 lakh out of the total income Rs 89,956.52 lakh of the company. The net worth contribution by DAT was also negligible.

  • I&B ministry extends deadline to submit comments on draft policy guidelines for uplinking, downlinking

    MUMBAI: The ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB) has extended the time till 7 June for submitting suggestions or comments on draft policy guidelines for uplinking and downlinking of television channels. MIB published the guidelines on 30 April.

    The last guidelines for uplinking and downlinking of satellite television channels were issued by the ministry in 2011. 

    MIB drafted the suggestions after consulting with stakeholders and also invited comments on the draft from them within the 15 days of publishing it. But some of the stakeholders expressed inability to draw up the response within the time limit requesting a further extension of the deadline.

New entrant Reliance Industries secure the 3rd spot and for the last two spots we see a swap in position as previous week’s players Horlicks gets up to the 4th spot and Colgate Swarna Vedshakti secures the 5th spot.

  • I&B Ministry extends deadline for submission of suggestions on policy for uplinking and downlinking

    New Delhi: The Information and Broadcasting Ministry (MIB) has extended the deadline for submission of comments and suggestions on the draft policy guidelines for uplinking and downlinking of TV channels for the second time.

    A circular issued by the I&B ministry stated that the extension was due to the inability of some of the stakeholders to draw up the response within the extended time limit of 31.5. 2020 and based on their request for further extension of the period for submitting their suggestions/comments.

    Subsequently, the ministry has extended the deadline from 31st May 2020 to 7th June 2020.

  • Dish TV asks Yes Bank to get MIB go-ahead on its share acquisition

    MUMBAI: Last Friday, YES Bank informed the stock exchanges that it had acquired 24.19 per cent stake in direct-to-home (DTH) operator Dish TV India Ltd. The latter said on Monday that the disclosure filed by the bank regarding the acquisition contains certain incorrect facts.

    Moreover, it has highlighted another important aspect as per DTH License guidelines which clearly prohibit any change in equity structures of licensee company without prior approval from the ministry of information & broadcasting (MIB). Hence, it has stated that the acquisition of shares by Yes Bank without the ministry’s consent is against the DTH guidelines and has requested Yes Bank to obtain the green signal from the MIB prior to effecting their transfer.

    More than a year after the second-rung GECs of top broadcasters turned paid, the channels are returning to the DD Freedish platform. Colors Rishtey, Zee Anmol and Sony Pal are likely to find a spot in today’s auction for the Freedish slot. There is no clarity over Star India’s participation for its channel Star Utsav Viacom18, Zee Entertainment and Sony Pictures Networks India are all set to make a comeback on DD Freedish as the three top broadcasters will bid for a slot in today’s auctions for their erstwhile free-to-air turned pay channels Colors Rishtey, Zee Anmol and Sony Pal, respectively.
